History6th -4th Century BC: A group of people known as the Nabateans settle in what is today the Kingdom of Jordan.

363 BC: A strong earthquake destroys half the city of Petra.

106 Ce: Nabatae, whose capital was Petra, becomes a Roman province under Trajan.

333 Ce: Jordan is destroyed by Alexander the Great.

662 Ce: Jordan is conquered by Muslim Arabs belonging to the Ummayad Empire.

1037 Ce: Seljuk Turks begin to rule Jordan.

1250 Ce: The Mamlukes seize control of the Egyptian Sultanate and rulefor the  next 267 years.

1517 Ce: Ottoman Turks conquered Jordan.

1880 Ce: Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine were part of Syria under Ottoman rule.

1812 Ce: Swiss explorer Jean Louis Burckhardt rediscovers the ancient city of Petra.

1923 Ce: Britain officially recognizes Transjordan.

1946 Ce: Jordan gains its independence from Britain.

1948 Ce: Thousands of Palestinians flee Arab-Israeli fighting to West Bank and Jordan.

1949 Ce: Transjordan is renamed the Hashemite Kingdom Jordan.

1951 Ce: King Abdullah Ibn Hussein is assassinated in Jerusalem.

1952 Ce: Hussein is proclaimed king.

1957 Ce: British troops leave Jordan.

1967 Ce: Israel takes control of Jerusalem and West Bank during Six-Day War.

1994 Ce: Jordan signs peace treaty with Israel.

1999 Ce: King Hussein passes away on February 7th. He is succeeded by his eldest son, Abdullah II, who still reigns the Kingdom today.
